3 Steps To Healthy Winter Hair

In the summer, frizzy hair can make you feel like a hot mess. In the winter, dry strands and static can be a total downer. Can’t we ever catch a break?

The answer is YES! The secret to shiny, beautiful hair is to prep it for the season ahead. Here’s how to keep it your mane in fighting shape when Old Man Winter arrives.

1. Feed Your Hair: Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. During the winter, it’s not as easy to maintain the moisture and shine promised by your favorite shampoo. Unfortunately, the weather is partly to blame. With dry air and shorter bursts of sunshine, tresses can become discolored, dry, and brittle. Here's the good news: You can trick your hair into believing it’s getting exactly what it needs to thrive!

It all boil down to your diet. You are what you eat and that goes for tresses, too. Whole grains, green vegetables, and protein-rich foods (like milk, eggs, and fish), can help boost your hair’s shine factor. For an extra pick me up, try giving your hair this sweet, protein filled treat. In a blender, mix:

2 T soy protein powder

1 cup milk

¼ cup fresh fruit

Now, apply it to your hair! Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then shampoo as normal. Repeat weekly to maintain healthy and silky hair throughout the moisture-zapping winter months.

2. Let Tresses Breathe: Anyone who has ever watched more than five minutes of television knows there are plenty of products out there that promise to transform your tresses. It’s tempting to want to scoop up as many as you can. But too many products day after day can create buildup that smothers and weighs down your hair. Your hair needs to breathe to remain healthy. Here is a little secret that I have prescribed for several celebrities to give their hair a little life support:

Mix equal parts shampoo and baking soda, massage thoroughly into hair, and rinse.

Think of it as a clarifying treatment. You’ll “breathe” new life into your hair and volume will be restored, perking up those blah strands.  You can repeat this every week, and don’t worry, its safe for chemically treated hair.

Snip Split Ends: No matter what the hair care commercials promise you, or even what your stylist says, I am here to tell you that you can’t fix split ends.  Split ends are dead hair and they can’t be resuscitated. Attempting to do so only stunts hair growth and delays the inevitable – a good trim!

Here’s an easy way to identify and trim those nasty split ends: Take small sections of hair and twirl downward. The split ends will stick out, making them easy to spot and clean up.
