Back To School Fashion: College Edition

Reading and writing and arithmetic...and fall fashion! It's back-to-school season, so we asked Emma Mahon and Jackie Graham, founders of collegiate couture line Emma Graham, to fill us in on what’s essential for our college closets this fall.

What are some staples that every college girl should have at the ready? Don’t leave home without a blazer! Blazers are a great fit for every occasion. They’re cool and casual with jeans, a simple shirt, and flat sandals. You can also pair your favorite blazer with a dress - especially as the weather starts to cool down, and even add tights and a scarf in October.  Blazers are also a great piece to have for networking events, interviews and internships. With all of the different occasions they can be worn to, blazers are definitely a great bang for your buck.

A skirt in a solid color is another great, versatile piece to have in your wardrobe. You can even go with a fun, bright color.  Solid colors, unlike prints, are always “in” and they are so much easier to style in different ways with shoes and accessories – they're the perfect no-brainer in the morning.  A skirt can be worn to class with a tucked in white tee and sandals for a casual, effortlessly crisp look.  On the weekend, throw on a chunky bright necklace and lipstick and you’re ready for dinner, happy hour, or Saturday errands and shopping. You can pair that same skirt with heels, a tucked in silk tank, and a clutch for a perfectly chic night-out ensemble.

What fall accessory is the number one must-have for returning students? This fall, you’ll definitely want to rock a pair of great riding boots. These boots are comfy, but also very polished looking – perfect for class or a night out!  If you’re ready to splurge, invest in a classic pair of Frye boots and you will have them forever. These boots are both practical and durable, whether you’re wearing them with skinny jeans and a button down or a mini skirt and tights! If you’re saving up for the school year, check out Steve Madden for a cute pair of cowboy boots, or even a quilted pair! DSW also has some great options every season for less cash!

How about book bags? When it comes to bags for class, the bigger the better (college is about studying, after all!) Look for a bag that you can throw absolutely everything into at the beginning of the day, from your notebooks to your gym shoes! A standard tote is often best for this because of the space it offers - and make sure you’re bringing something water proof! J. Crew always has great standard totes and Kate Spade has a few that are very colorful and cute. Of course, Longchamp is another great option for a durable bag that’s also totally chic!

How can you look chic at school without breaking the bank? When you’re back to school shopping, focus on staple wardrobe pieces that can be styled in a wide variety of ways.  Solid colors and classic silhouettes are great because they are versatile and can be worn over and over again. Investing in quality, versatile pieces will matter months down the road – and you can always start looking at fall preview sales so you don’t have to pay full price! Stick to buying super trendy looks at less expensive retailers like H&M and Forever21.
