Does Having Regular Sex Make You Even Sexier?

There’s been mounting evidence that having regular sex is great for your health — and even enhances your looks!

According to Scottish researcher Dr. David Weeks, a clinical neuropsychologist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and author of Secrets of the Superyoung, having sex about three times a week can make you look almost a decade younger! So if you’ve been having trouble supercharging your sex drive, perhaps its anti-aging benefits will help get you in the mood. Here are 4 other ways sex makes you look and feel healthier and sexier.

1. It gives you a youthful glow.

There’s actually a physical reason that sex gives you an afterglow. The flush of blood under your skin is a natural part of the arousal process due to increased vascularity of the skin caused by the widening of blood vessels, explains women’s health specialist Dr. Nancy Simpkins. This type of circulation also results in decreased blood pressure and heart rate as well as a more youthful appearance.

2. It reduces acne.

In addition to giving your skin a healthy and youthful glow, regular sex has also been proven to reduce acne breakouts.

Acne is often caused by a hormonal imbalance, especially an imbalance of sex hormones. Doing the deed regularly can help bring harmony to your hormone levels and keep your skin clearer.

The hormones released during sex, including serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin also lower stress levels in the body, which can help improve your complexion.

3. It makes your skin smoother.

“Multiple hormones are released before and after orgasm that have beneficial effects,” says Dr. Simpkins. For example, orgasms can trigger growth hormone production, which leads to collagen production and the added bonus of smoother skin.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, has long been touted as an anti-aging champ and has even been looked at as a fighter of low sex drive (in the supplement form). “DHEA boosts your immune system and keeps skin healthy,” explains Dr. Simpkins.

“Increased estrogen levels that occur with frequent orgasms has also been linked to a long-term decrease in wrinkle production which leads to healthier, smoother skin,” says Dr. Simpkins.

4. It strengthens your hair and nails.

Luscious locks and long nails are also benefactors from the regular romp.

“Increased heart rate and blood pressure just prior to orgasm can bring increased blood flow to all parts of the body including hair and nails,” says Dr. Simpkins. “And increased estrogen is once again responsible for keeping hair and nails young.”

What researchers know for sure is that sex is good for you. Whether it’s your heart or your hair, the hormones released during sex produce a number of hormones and other biologic changes that combat pain, decrease stress and trigger positive emotions.

With that in mind, take out your prescription and get to work on filling it.
