Get Gorgeous : Red-Carpet Make-Up Trends You Can Do

Check out the oh-so-gorgeous Jessica Chastain at last night’s Golden Globe Awards. Isn’t she a vision in red and seafoam? Those 50’s-esque, flowing waves in her hair! That berrylicious pop of color on her lips!

Jessica's glamorous, yet modern, look was the work of celebrity makeup artist Kristofer Buckle. Rather than using strong lines and shapes, he decided to play off the softness of her gown with pretty washes of color.

I was lucky enough to chat with Kristofer once he was done prepping the star for her big night. Here are the top three beauty trends he spotted on the red carpet, and the secrets to re-creating Chastain’s look at home.

  1. The “Anti-Trend”: By embracing her fair skin and strawberry locks, Jessica became an awards season trendsetter! Buckle says that this year, A-listers are paying attention to what colors and products work for them, rather than just going for the crowd-pleasing smoky eye or wine-stained lip. Refreshing, right?

  2. Long, Luscious Lashes: Sky high, voluminous lashes is a trend that’s holding strong, both on the red carpet and on the street. Kristofer applied three coats of mascara to Jessica’s peepers, then brushed her lashes out to fluff.

  3. Ta-Ta To The Tan: Kristofer says celebs are over the whole overly-tan thing. In fact, they’re embracing their natural skin tone and simply enhancing it with a shimmery glow.

Ready to achieve the ethereal look that Jessica pulled off so beautifully? Here's how!

STEP 1: Kristofer gave Jessica’s complexion uniform texture with L’Oréal Paris’ new Revitalift Miracle Blur ($24.99) before using a foundation brush to lightly apply YSL’s Le Teint Touche Éclat in B10 ($55). Understanding that the red carpet is all about skin, Kristofer also used Revitalift Miracle Blur on Jessica’s décolletage, shoulders and back to create a creamy, “perfect skin” look.

STEP 2: To address any little imperfections and highlight around the eyes, Kristofer reached for the cult-favorite YSL Touche Éclat ($40).

STEP 3: He then dusted the caramel shade found in L’Oréal Paris’ Colour Caresse Eye Shadow Quad in What Happens in Vegas ($7.95) onto Jessica’s lids and used the bronze shade toward the outer corners of the eyelids.  He also used a bit of the bronze shade under her eyes to open them up.

STEP 4: On Jessica’s lashes, Kristofer applied three coats the L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara ($9.95). He used the waterproof version and only applied it on the top lashes to ensure her eyes looked lifted. In place of a liquid liner, he used the mascara to create a winged eye look that’s fresh and modern.

STEP 5: Jessica felt there should be an expressions of ruby in her makeup, so Kristofer swiped the L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Shine Stain in Berry Persistent ($9.99) onto her lips.
