Haircare Maintenance Schedule

by Amber Gallegos, professional hairstylist

Your hair is an important part of your image, and maintaining its shape and health is crucial. Do you wait until your hair gets unruly to schedule an appointment, and to your dismay your hairstylist is all booked up? Knowing your hair and scheduling your next appointment in advance is a must to ensure sanity in your beauty regime.

1. As a general rule of thumb; the shorter the hair, the more frequent you should get your hair done. If you have anything shorter than chin length I recommend a cut anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks. If your hair is longer than your shoulders or you are growing your hair out, 8 to 10 weeks is average. When you are growing your hair out make sure you inform your hairstylist. This will ensure they trim only the amount necessary on your length, but maintains your shape within your hair.

2. If you are rocking one of those amazing smoothing or straightening treatments, the maintenance varies depending on the brand. Some last 2 months and some are up to 6 months. Be sure to have a conversation with your stylist in order to schedule your next treatment in time.

3. Conditioning treatments are amazing and help you in your day-to-day styling as well as keeping your hair moisturized and fresh. If you color treat your hair, it is important to receive a conditioning treatment after every treatment. The conditioning treatment acts as a ‘top coat’ for your hair. Helping you keep the bright vibrant color even longer.

4. Keep in mind, your stylist is trying to maintain the health and beauty of your hair, too. If you feel like your stylist wants you to pay for treatments that you don’t need, ask them about it and let them know how you are feeling. Every question is a good question. If they still don’t get it than it is time to find a new stylist.
