Taking Care Of Yourself First Isn’t Selfish

It has taken me fourteen years to finally feel unapologetic about taking care of myself first.  I’ve learned that I don’t have to survey anyone else to make sure that it’s okay that I meet my needs.  I am comfortable saying what I need and taking off the mask of trying to do it all and make it look effortless.  (How ridiculous!)  I’ve accepted that the word “No” helps me to maintain my energy for what is both priority and most important.  I understand that not every person will love me for choosing to build a life drama free without should’s, would’s and ought’s as the guiding mantra.  I’m alright with that.

Today, I am able to care for my family so much more.  I am able to maintain peace in my environment because I deserve it.  I am able to take care of my body because I feel better when I do.  I am able to enjoy this beautiful thing called life and be unapologetic about that.  Today, I am surrounded by an amazing loving and supportive community called family and friends who don’t judge me, lie on me and who allow my God given light to shine.  I am grateful for that.

All of this is a result of me following my mother’s advice fourteen years ago to take care of myself first in order to love everyone and everything else even more.  Great advice.
