Parenting Tip of the Month: Nap Time to Quiet Time
Has your child stopped taking naps? If so, your child will benefit from a period of quiet time. Here are some ideas to help make the transition-
  • Set aside a specific time every day for quiet time. Ultimately, your child will be more cooperative when they come to see it as an everyday activity that is part of their routine.
  • Have them take quiet time in their room.
  • Offer special activities they ONLY get during that time. Do not offer these toys and/or activities any other time.
  • Let your child control how long the quiet time should last. The only rule is their room must be cleaned up before they come out. Most kids will only stay in their room a few moments in the beginning. But once they start playing (this is where creative activities come in handy) they will stay in awhile. When they start to ask, “can I come out now” it’s easy. They can come out anytime they want as long as their room is cleaned. After a week or two they truly look forward to the time on their own and it’s a critical aspect of developing their ability to entertain themselves and to unwind. It is also a great way to help them learn to clean up after themselves. Just make sure they are doing most of the cleaning.
  • Make sure if you have more than one child they take their quiet time separately. Kids need some time alone and it helps to reduce sibling aggression.
  • Ultimately, your child is developing a positive self -image and a sense of accomplishment. This becomes their own special time they have just with themselves. This is a necessary trait in developing good self-esteem!
