Parent's Feedback,
May 2002
"I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to have found this book. Finally, someone who understands my child! After reading this book and applying its suggestions, my 2 1/2 year old daughter's behavior dramatically shifted for the better within 1 month, and I'm amazed at how easily the day passes now after 7 months. Standard discipline techniques had failed for us, and this book explains why. We had been told things such as, "If she's doing something you don't want her to do, just distract her", and "Just let a tantrum run its course. She's just testing her limits." Well, this book explained that our highly spirited child is persistent, so it's incredibly difficult to distract her, and that a spirited child typically has a tantrum because of an overswelling of emotion, not in order to manipulate a situation. Parenting the Spirited Child is more challenging than parenting other children, but using the techniques of this book, I have come to appreciate the positive aspects of living with an intense, persistent child. I highly recommend this book!"

Raising Your Spirited Child
A Guide for Parents Whose Child Is More Intense, Sensitive, Perceptive, Persistent, and Energetic

by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka

Recently, temperament traits have come to the forefront of child development theory. In Raising Your Spirited Child, Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's first contribution is to redefine the "difficult child" as the "spirited" child, a child that is, as she says, MORE. Many people are leery about books that are too quick to "type" kids, but Kurcinka, a parent of a spirited child herself and a parent educator for 20 years, doesn't fall into that trap. Instead, she provides tools to understanding your own temperament as well as your child's. When you understand your temperamental matches--and your mismatches--you can better understand, work, live, socialize, and enjoy spirit in your child. By reframing challenging temperamental qualities in a positive way, and by giving readers specific tools to work with these qualities, Kurcinka has provided a book that will help all parents, especially the parents of spirited children, understand and better parent their children.
