Dog Gone It!

March 6, 2015

My MARtians, as you know I’m one of the most positive people you will ever meet. I always try to find the silver lining in life’s journey of ups and downs. This Winter, although I still appreciate how the seemingly never-ending snow creates a wonderful winter wonderland, dog gonnit it I’m so ready for Spring!

Truth be told, with Spring less than 14 days away, Mother Nature has her work cut out for her. I can’t help thinking about that 70’s stop-motion cartoon The Year Without A Santa Claus; in it, Mother Nature’s son, Snow Miser, is responsible for Winter. Where is her other son, Heat Miser, when we need him?  (If you have not seen it click here.)

Every year at this time I’m fond of saying “Why wait for Spring when you have MARch?” But this year, given the layers of snow, it’s impossible to work in the garden yet, so everything is on delay. I’m desperate to open the Garden Studio & Folly, update my planters and window boxes and, of course, do an early Spring cleaning. All delayed this year, thanks to the snow.

The silver lining? You see, a cold, deep, winter dormancy is actually a good thing for the garden; a prolonged rest means everything will be well insulated, protected and hydrated for when the time comes.

Luckily there is something in the air that is more powerful then the weatherman’s predictions. Simple hints from Mother Earth are slowly emerging, giving us little bits of reassurance. A few subliminal clues—icicles melting and birds chirping—offer us hope the vibrant burst of colors and texture will soon no doubt emerge with a vengeance.

Yes, Spring really is in the air. The dog days of Winter will soon be over, so let the celebrations of Spring begin!
