10 Ways to Predict Your Financial Success

10 Ways to Predict Your Financial SuccessBy Kelly Robbins

It’s June. Where do you stand with your business goals for the year?

Where you fall on this spectrum often reflects how you live your life and how successful your business is. You are either in control of where you are headed and steering your path or you are floating through life, letting circumstances and obstacles determine your outcomes each day and ultimately the results you achieve.

The “floating and steering” analogy may be hard to detect in ourselves, but can be easily seen by a trained outsider.

For example, this past week I interviewed with two people for my coaching programs. Both of them have financial goals they set at the first of the year, yet both are on unquestionably different tracks to achieving them.

Mary reached out to me because she knew she was stuck and didn’t know how to get started moving. She told me “I realized it was March and I hadn’t moved forward on my goal of making $1,500 extra a week yet. I need help and that’s why I contacted you.”

The second interview I did was with Paul. Paul’s main goal this year is a $20,000 increase in income annually. He wants to increase his income to achieve his family’s personal goal of having enough so his wife can stay home with their child. Paul knew his numbers were up over last year but not sure how much. He also didn’t know why they were up or which of the little bit of marketing he did was actually working. Paul has a goal but isn’t actively pursuing it AND he is not serious enough about achieving his goal to take the time to get the help he needs to achieve them. “I know what to do”, says Paul, “I’m just not doing it. I’ll start now”.

Which one of these two do you think is most likely to achieve their goal this year?

Most of us have periods in our life where we float. We aren’t actively making focused decisions that bring us closer to our goal. If you don’t recognize this floating behavior in yourself you may recognize friends or family members that live their lives in this way.

For many people the floating lifestyle looks like this:

  • Complaining about their job but never applying anywhere else or doing anything about it.
  • Complaining about their spouse but again, not taking action to improve the relationship or create change in their environment.
  • Someone who has accumulated debt and is stressed about it, yet doesn’t take steps to curtail their spending.
  • Living an “okay” life, happy with the status quo but not working towards any goals or major achievements in life.
  • Frequently commenting on their weight gain but feeling helpless because they feel their health is out of their control.

On the other side of the spectrum are the people who are “steering” their lives. On a consistent basis these people:

  • Make forward thinking plans, and quickly take action on creating the change they want.
  • Don’t get bogged down in day-to-day activities.
  • Continuously assess their situation and make adjustments when even slightly off-course.
  • Take action steps to increase their business revenues or get out of the job they hate.
  • Knuckle-down and do whatever it takes to make their goals a reality.
  • Consistently push themselves by taking classes, trying new things, and getting help when they need it. Take action swiftly and decisively.

The people steering their lives take the same actions that you probably know you should do – although you may not see them doing it. You only see them achieving goal after goal, accomplishment after accomplishment. Or you see them after they’ve accomplished their goals. What you don’t see is all the hard work they did to build up to the success they achieved, you see the results.

How “on track” are you to achieving your goals? Here’s our CWI Success Quiz you can take to determine for yourself if you are “floating” or “steering” your way to success…

Answer yes or no to each

1. I have good intentions to do more marketing but never have time.

2. I like to have everything planned out before I make a move and, if possible, know every step of the way beforehand to make sure I will be successful.

3. I have so many ideas, but I don’t know where to start.

4. In general, I feel more like a machine going through the motions of my day operating out of habit and routine.

5. My life lacks passion and creativity.

6. I want to take steps to move out of my patterns of being disconnected but don’t know where to start.

7. I’m too busy to take on anything else, but I’d like to.

8. I set several New Year’s resolutions, but forgot about them.

9. I feel lost in my day-to-day activities.

10. I have a hard time staying focused on the finish line.

If you answered yes to five or more of these statements you are floating through certain aspects of your business and/or life.

Over time there is a huge and noticeable difference in lifestyle and happiness between the people that float and the people that steer their course in life. As a coach I see the behind the scenes effort and determination that differentiates the two groups that others don’t usually see. Interestingly enough – it’s usually the people steering their business that reach out for coaching and guidance, the floaters tend to think about it…because they don’t have time to act.
