Are You an Undercover Entrepreneur?

Shy Business OwnerBy Milissa Harding

Being an entrepreneur can definitely bring up fears, anxieties, worries and doubts. It is very common for entrepreneurs to hide, play it safe and only do what feels comfortable, at the expense of growing both personally and in business. I like to call this the undercover entrepreneur syndrome.

It may sound a little funny, but it can really have debilitating effects on you as an entrepreneur and on the overall success of your business. It may feel a bit unnerving at first to identify as an undercover entrepreneur, but once you become clear on the areas in which you tend to shrink and play small, you’re in a wonderful position to begin moving forward.

So, how do you know if you are an undercover entrepreneur?

You’re an undercover entrepreneur if you…

  • Keep your business a secret from others. You don’t feel “ready” to let other people know that you’re a business owner
Talk about your business as though it’s a hobby
  • Only work in your business when you “feel” like it
  • Fear asking for help and working with others…you’d rather build your business by yourself
Are waiting until you make lots of money before telling people that you’re in business
  • Are not really able to describe what it is that you do

Do any of those descriptions sound like you? It can be so easy to play small as an entrepreneur, but when you do, you limit the potential that you have to succeed in your businesses. What would it be like if the above descriptions were no longer true for you? What if the following statements described you instead?

You’re a shining entrepreneur if you…

  • Let everyone know about your business, because you’re proud and excited about how your business makes a difference in the lives of others
  • Talk about your business as a life-long commitment
  • Have a consistent schedule for working in your business
  • Ask for support, mentorship and coaching to help you move forward faster
  • Demonstrate through your actions that you believe in the potential of your business to make good money
  • Can easily describe what you do in a way that captures the interest of others

Wow! Those descriptions definitely have a more positive energy to them, don’t they? It all comes down to how you see yourself and how your see your business. So, how do you want to see yourself as an entrepreneur?

Your homework assignment…

Highlight which of the undercover entrepreneur descriptions fits you the most. Then, highlight the opposite description in the shining entrepreneur column. What specific things can you do today to start shining as an entrepreneur?
