Don’t Be Afraid to Take the Brass Ring!

Don’t Be Afraid to Take the Brass Ring!By Barbara Seifert, Ph. D., CPC

Have you ever had a desire or dreamed of achieving something that would be life-changing? It might be that you have always wanted to move to a different city or state; perhaps you have desired to own your own business; or it might be that you are ready to graduate and begin your professional career. Having those desires only fuels them more and the anticipation early on feels exciting, giving one the motivation to keep moving towards that end-aim.

But, let’s move to today and that desire is upon you: the very thing you have wished for is now here. Do you move forward towards that desire or does it leave you feeling as if you are paralyzed with fear? The closer you get to having to make a decision the more anxious you may feel, which can elicit a host of uncomfortable emotions. The more you run from the thing you want, the more you will beat yourself up over that inaction. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps on repeating.

My advice – don’t be afraid to take the brass ring! The old saying, “You’ll never know if you don’t let go” never rings more true: letting go of your past will lead you to your future, which is what you have envisioned and worked for. The fear of the unknown is what is standing in your way. If so, then perhaps it’s time to go back and remember how you got to this point:

Remember:

Go pull out those old journal entries, bucket lists or dream boards where you wrote out what you have wanted. Remembering our desires typically brings back those memories and the excitement you felt.

Reflect:

Take time to savor those feelings and how you had envisioned your life once the dream was realized. Use your visuals to create that future as this can help you to “see” it and can move your thoughts from fear to action.

Refocus:

Rewrite in only positive statements your “why”; list all of the steps that you need to prepare for so you will feel more in control; slow, methodical steps slows down the fear center allowing forward motion. It will help you to embrace what lies ahead.

Facing a life-changing decision, while needed, can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be if you keep the reason and the benefit in your mind. Don’t be afraid to go for it – take the brass ring!
