Getting Past That Voice in Your Head

Getting Past That Voice in Your HeadBy Kelly Robbins

Do you sometimes feel like a hypocrite when you are talking to prospects, unsure about your ability to help them?

Have you ever not bid on a project because you felt under-qualified and then later kicked yourself because you could have done it if you had only tried?

Many of us have a little voice inside our head telling us what a hypocrite we are. That before we sell ourselves as an “expert”, that WE should be wildly successful first, know the answer to every question they could possibly ask, and have already done exactly what that person wants to create.

That voice may say things such as, “I am just a mom with three kids! I haven’t made millions of dollars or been the top sales person or saved the world. Why should she believe me? They will never hire me, so why try?”

There’s no question that as a business owner you are positioning yourself as an expert and need to have a level of expertise in what you do. However, there is a big leap in your confidence when you go from “I’ve never done that” to “I’ve done it twenty times and have all these success stories”.

If you haven’t done it twenty times and don’t have success stories to support you, there is a good chance you might be a little insecure about your ability to get the job done. Just because you haven’t done it yet doesn’t mean that you can’t.

Are you aware of that little voice inside you, doubting your abilities and sabotaging your selling efforts?

Many aren’t. Let’s look at a few ways this voice manifests itself in my coaching clients…

  • Avoid approaching qualified prospects.
  • Not asking for the sale.
  • Serial course taker – you never know ENOUGH.
  • Stopping before taking action needed to win business.
  • Doing the bare minimum. This way you can tell yourself you “did it” but it didn’t work. Truthfully you didn’t give it your all.

First of all, understand that the voice is normal.

Secondly, you can’t let these self-sabotaging thoughts affect your confidence or you will never move forward.

You know how to run your business and do what you do more than anyone else – be proud and confident of that fact.

We all have special gifts and it’s our obligation to share them with others.

Don’t listen to that voice of no confidence! When you hear that voice turn around and walk away from it – giving it no energy at all. Walk in the opposite direction of what the voice is telling you – give it no fuel positively or negatively (don’t beat yourself up for hearing the voice either!).

Ignore the voice and act anyway.
