How To Increase Your Facebook Likes… Without Annoying Your Fans

Increase Your Facebook Likes and EngagementBy Holly Resiem Hanna

A few months ago, I started creating text only updates on my Facebook Fan Page. Meaning that I would add the text for my update in the status box, and then I’d put the link to the article within the first comment. The reason I did this was because Edgerank, had drastically decreased the number of individuals that were seeing and interacting on my Facebook posts.

If you’re not familiar with Edgerank, it’s Facebook’s new algorithm which automatically determines which posts you see, and which ones you don’t. According to Brian Solis, Facebook is trying to help ensure that you see the “best content” and that the spammy content is filtered down.

However, the caveat to this is that anyone can PAY to have their updates and posts ranked higher, thus being seen by more people.

I wasn’t the only Publisher using and taking notice of this text only technique. Social Media Expert, Andrea Vahl talks about the text only phenomenon on Copyblogger, saying, “A recent phenomenon has surfaced and been confirmed by many Page owners and number crunchers that Text posts have been getting much higher Reach. Meaning those posts are going into more of their Fans’ News Feeds.”

And check out Popular Blogger, Tsh from Simple Mom, also utilizing this text only technique on Facebook:

But just last week, a Facebook Fan asked me…

“Just curious – why do you not put the link in the status message? I see people doing this a lot, and I’ve never once understood why. Who told you it was a smart thing to do? I guess I just think of it as more annoying than anything. You have something like a tenth of a second to capture my interest, and making me click to view the comments and then click on the link. Not something I would do, but if it works for you, go for it I guess!”

Of course this got me thinking. “Am I annoying my Fans by making them click through to the comments to reach the link?” When I sat down and really thought about it, it was a tad bothersome, and it looked a little unprofessional.

So how do you increase your Facebook likes and engagement, without annoying your audience?

Well, it’s actually pretty easy – simply add your text to the status box, along with your link. Facebook will automatically generate a preview screen with an image to the article, go ahead and cancel the preview out by clicking on the “x” in the right hand corner, so that your update looks like this image on the right:

As you can see from the example above, when I updated my status with the normal preview screen and image, only 557 of my 8,000+ Fans saw the post. But when I did the text only update, the post was seen by 2,892 individuals and it received 14 likes – much better.

So there you have it, any easy and simple way for you to increase your Facebook likes and engagement, without annoying your Fans.
