Interview with Anna Marie Martin, Younique Products Independent Presenter

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.

At the early age of 19, I got my first taste of being an entrepreneur as a hairdresser and by 22 had to give up my dream for medical reasons. I’ve always loved the freedom of working for myself and have worked in direct sales on and off for the last 18 years. I’ve always found comfort in knowing that if I needed money, I was ultimately in control of finding a way to bring in the extra income I needed. I wasn’t able to do that in the corporate world unless I worked overtime which in turn took me away from my family.

Knowing my history in the beauty industry, a friend of mine brought me her Younique presenter kit and left it with me over a holiday weekend.  I immediately fell in love with the products and instead of ordering the products I signed up to become a presenter. I’m so excited to be able to back in the beauty industry again – I didn’t realize how much I missed it! I’m still able to work from home, control my schedule and spend time with my family.

What did you do before launching your own business?

Prior to Younique landing on my kitchen table, I was working for myself as a certified internet marking virtual assistant. I loved what I was doing but I had reached my own virtual ceiling because I was trading time for money and didn’t have time to launch products of my own.

What are the startup costs for becoming a consultant, and what does it include?

How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent is your home office?

I work anywhere between 5 to 15 hours a week. The beauty of Younique is that it’s Facebook-based so everything I need to do can be done with my iPhone or iPad. I can work from the line at the grocery store, sitting at my son’s play group, waiting in line at the bank or anywhere I’m sitting and have a spare minute. I love the fact that I’m not tied to my computer like I was before!

How would you rate your success?

I’m proud to say that I’ve advanced much quicker with Younique than I have with any other direct sales company. The compensation plan is very easy to understand and achieve. Nothing makes you feel more successful than getting paid daily!

What has been your biggest business struggle as a direct sales consultant?

My biggest struggle was getting outside of my immediate circle but because Younique is Facebook-based I’m finding it much easier to broaden my reach. I’ve place a few ads, ran a couple giveaways and done some local events which are starting to pay off.

What advice would you give to a new consultant starting out?

The most important thing I like to share with my team members and other consultants is the success you see from me now is the result of what I did 60-90 days ago. If you’re frustrated because you aren’t getting the interaction and sales you’d like, don’t give up… your audience IS watching and listening!

How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?

I’m still old school and primarily use a paper planner to keep track of everything I have going on. I actually use bits and pieces from several planners as well as my own forms in a custom binder. To keep everything mobile, a practice I learned in the corporate world is to coordinate the paper and electronic versions of my calendar at the end of each day. The secret is to make your system work for you!
