Interview with Julie Bashkin, Founder and CEO of KLUTCHclub

Julie Bashkin, Founder and CEO KLUTCH Club

I love the element of surprise!

When I was little, we would go to the local church carnival, and while many of the other kids spent their tickets on the cake walk or candy, I always spent mine on an game called grab bag. Hundreds of grab bags (brown paper lunch sacks filled with prizes) were lined up with designated numbers, you would simply grab a number out of a bucket, and then win the corresponding grab bag. It was such excitement finding out what was in the bag and my love of surprises, well it still holds true today!

That’s why when KLUTCHclub contacted me to review their company I was thrilled!

KLUTCHclub is a new monthly subscription service that sends a hand-picked and “themed” box of holistic health, fitness and wellness products – organic protein bars, workout wear, skincare products, teas, etc. – right to your doorstep every month, making it a no brainer to incorporate healthier choices with ease. Members learn about new, niche brands and products that suit their lifestyles, and get access to exclusive deals and offers from companies that share their values. Each box is full of $50+ of products, but only costs subscribers around $17 a piece.

The box I received was the April, Spring Clean Your Body Box. It was filled with tea samples, organic oils, nutritious snacks, a gift card for yoga clothes and even a yoga DVD. How fun would it be to receive these boxes every month?!

To tell you more about her KLUTCHclub, here is Founder and CEO Julie Bashkin:

What a fun business concept! How did you come up with the idea?

I faced my own health and wellness struggles and wanted a solution to my needs.  I was 30 lbs overweight and then lost it all.  Prior to KLUTCHclub I was working at McKinsey & Company’s Chicago Office serving Consumer Packaged Goods and Retail clients.  I was a working at least 75+ hours a week and was constantly traveling.  While on the road I was always looking for ways to maintain the healthy lifestyle that I had when I lost the weight.  This included healthy snacks, nutritious meals, and a workout plan that I could continue to do while on the road.  I lacked the time to search for these things and only wished that all of this could easily be delivered to my doorstep.  And with that thought, I decided to launch KLUTCHclub!

What has been your biggest business struggle as an entrepreneur?

The biggest struggle is the worry about letting down other people- the investors, the team and the customer.  Others depend on me and my actions and my decisions.  All of my choices have consequences and risk taking really impacts all 3 groups of people.

What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur?

Always think 10 steps ahead of the rest (stay ahead of your team, your customers and what they want, your competition) but rely on others to support you.  When starting a company it is so important to be able to think of all the little details, because that is what can make a company great or cause it to fail.  This is linked to making sure to invest in a great team.  Don’t try and take care of all of the details on your own.  Bring on people with skills and capabilities that you do not have who will help you execute your vision.  Do not be greedy with your money, the equity you own, or the attention you get- in the end your team, your customers, your investors, and other partners are helping you build it.
