Interview with Kelly Wenzel – Founding Director with Stella & Dot and National Account Manager with Simply Hired

Interview with Kelly Wenzel - with Stella & Dot and National Account Manager with Simply HiredTell us about your work at home position with Stella & Dot.

Stella & Dot’s mission is to give women globally the means to style their own life on their own terms. With Stella & Dot, our celebrity coveted accessories brand is only sold through private trunk shows, personal shopping sessions and our ecommerce site. My week consists of booking and holding trunk shows with new and old friends, but most of my time is focused on coaching and supporting my fabulous team of 500+ women across the US, Canada, and the UK.

How were you able to bring your current position home?

After 11 years tied to a desk in the staffing world and running my Stella & Dot business along side, I realized that I was so much more efficient with my time and happier the days when I worked form home – so I left to focus 100% on my Stella & Dot Business. There is something to be said for loading the dishwasher while listening to a training call and being the one to be in carpool pick up when you choose. I wanted to be more present for my family and working from home with Stella & Dot has allowed me to structure my working day around our schedule not the other way around.

Are there any tips you would recommend to people who want to do the same thing?

My best advice is to look outside the box. Social selling companies offer many, many opportunities for a flexible income both part time and full time and even while working a corporate career and running a family these businesses can be quite the compliment. If you are in a corporate environment, I believe the answer is always “no” if you don’t ask for a flexible schedule. Always baby step into this situations because it can be an adjustment for you and your company. I truly believe that you as a women we wear so many hats in life that having the opportunity to balance it all from the comfort of your own home in your yoga pants is magical!

How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent is your home office?

Each week is different and that’s what I love about my life! It is always constantly changing and evolving. On average, I work 40 hours a week but my time may not be consistent blocks, but spread out in chunks throughout the week. I pick up my kiddos two days a week and once they are in the car I am 100% in mommy mode, so those missing hours are usually made up on a day that I have our nanny.  The majority of my work is done from my home office, back porch, kitchen table and even bed (shhh!!! Don’t’ tell anyone) but I do get out at least one night or afternoon a week for a trunk show. Also, the beauty of this business is I can do my coaching and prospecting calls anywhere on my own terms.

As a mom of two, how do you manage all of your personal and business activities?

It’s all about time mastery and balance in my life. I am a huge believer in buying back your time and putting things through a dollars per hour filter.  Ask yourself is paying $10 to allow Whole Foods to do my grocery shopping for me worth a hour of my time that can be spent elsewhere? Also, you have to say “NO.” As women, we struggle with not wanting to disappoint anyone and in the end over commit ourselves.  It is okay to say, “I don’t choose this” and not think twice. Lastly, I believe in taking time for you.  If you don’t fill your own cup, you won’t be able to help others. Whether that is quiet time and waking up early before the rest of the house to read a book over a cup of coffee, date nights with your hubby or a much needed massage – be selfish and take care of YOU!

Besides being a leader for Stella & Dot you also have jumped back into the corporate world as a National Account Manager for Simply Hired.

Right at the end of last year, I had an amazing opportunity to work for an upcoming tech company and help grow the enterprise sales channel. I was truly compelled by the company, leadership, and vision and couldn’t pass up what has been an opportunity of a lifetime. I work from home while growing and nurturing enterprise accounts in 9 states! Life is crazy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

On those “don’t feel like it days”, what motivates you to keep going?

Honestly, I let myself have that day. I may not change out of my pajamas; I may catch up for a little while on the DVR or get out and do some shopping. We are all human and sometimes we just need a break. It’s always amazing how much better I feel the next day when I do this. Lastly, I think my biggest motivator in my life is my kiddos and especially having a little girl in today’s world. I want her to know that even when life gives you a run for your money, you have to keep trying. Nothing worth having comes easy – I want to set that example for both my son and daughter that they can do anything but they can never give up!
