Interview with Lifestyle Blogger, Amanda Ornelas

Interview with Lifestyle Blogger, Amanda OrnelasTell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.

I am a very creative, hard working and self-determined person. I value being genuine, being present in the moment and always giving back. I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV and am the oldest of 3 girls. Being the oldest sister I think it instilled in me this sense of leadership and mentorship to others; specifically younger girls.

I’ve always taken the leadership role in any situation; not because I’m competitive or feel the need to take charge but because I know how to build rapport with people, know how to delegate and will work on a project longer than others. I graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelors of Science, focusing in Kinesiological Studies.

While in college, I was the President and then Vice President of my sorority and was given the opportunity to travel quite a bit to attend leadership trainings, conferences and conventions. From those trainings I would come back to my chapter and teach leadership courses. I started having this passion for personal development and love for understanding how the mind works. Since graduating, I started my own Women Empowerment Organization called New Age Women; geared towards the high school, collegiate and young adult years.

I teach young women how to identify who they are, what they want in life, how to connect with others and then give them the tools and support they need to pursue their goals. I’ve also started my own lifestyle blog that features mind, body, heart and soul. I write daily on mindset encouragement, perspective, fitness, health, giving back to others, relationships and the joy of doing what you love. I also reach out and interview people in my local community about their journey of doing what they love. Oh and I am newly engaged to be married to James Silvas, Speaker and Performance Coach of Silvas Speaks.

What did you do before launching your blog?

Researched a bit. I had a desire to write daily encouragement and wanted to turn it into a blog format – so I researched other bloggers in that field. Helped gain perspective and get advice on what format and hosting websites to use that worked best. Then I bought a domain name and started building the site.

How are you currently growing your blog?

Since launching, I’ve done everything from WordPress Bloggers, to Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Emails – even texting everyone in my phone book about my new website. Currently, I have a PR/Marketing representative who manages reaching a larger network for me.

What types of marketing strategies work best for you?

Honestly, talking to people. Talking to people you meet daily about what you do and being excited about it. Also, commenting on other people’s blogs or Facebook feeds led them to follow what you’re doing as well. Lastly, being consistent and setting goals for your blog are the best ‘behind the scenes’ marketing you can do for yourself.

How are you monetizing your blog?

People/businesses usually want something in return if they are going to give or help finance your blog. I’ve found that you have to be willing to highlight and link vendors, products, and businesses within your blog. Build up a following and know your statistics so you can present your target market and how it will benefit the person or business you’re trying to get financing from. Reaching out to people, businesses and other websites to build your sources is the first step.

What advice do you have for other women who want to start their own lifestyle blog?

Don’t talk yourself out of it. It’ll be more rewarding for you than anyone else. Don’t feel like there’s already so many other blogs and bloggers out there that you’ll just blend in – find your edge, find your voice and stick to it!

On those “don’t feel like it days”, what motivates you to keep going?

Accountability. I’m doing this for my readers, viewers and the goals that I’ve set for myself. Also, I write daily encouragement so during my struggles into motivation for others works pretty well for me.

How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?

Daily planner. Checklist. And setting time frames.
