Interview with Michelle Wilkins – Owner of Think Pretty

Interview with Michelle WilkinsTell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.

I’ve been in the beauty industry for almost twenty years (wow, how did time pass so quickly?!). I started out as a makeup artist; working for MAC, the Body Shop and as a freelance artist for photo shoots and weddings. In the mid-90s I decided to start making my own products to share with family and friends. I wanted to incorporate the types of scents that, at the time, weren’t at all popular. Blends of marshmallow, caramel soufflé and chocolate mousse quickly turned in to luscious creams, butters and bubbles – Little Shop of Beauty came to be! Running that company was basically my business school. I made a myriad of mistakes but learned a lot and made a ton of friends along the way. One of the products that I created was my Pure Beauty Elixir, it quickly because a cult hit and when I left Little Shop in 2011, I took my much loved facial treat with me. Voila…Think Pretty was born!

What did you do before launching your own business?

I was a makeup artist and lover of all manner of beauty treats!

What are the startup costs for becoming a consultant, and what does it include?

Our kits are very reasonable. We sell our 7 signature Beauty Elixirs at cost along with marketing materials (and free shipping) for $128. We’re happy to send out free samples as well!

How many hours do you work a week and how much is spent is your home office?

I work anywhere from 35-50 hours per week. The majority of which is in my home office.

How would you rate your success?

After more than 12 years of running my own business I’ve learned that the most important aspect for me is to provide value to my clients. In that regard, I consider myself very successful. However, I am constantly striving to get the word out about the importance of using pure, natural products – there’s always an opportunity to help someone simplify their skincare routine!

What has been your biggest business struggle as a direct sales consultant?

Because I’ve developed all the products from scratch, it’s sometimes difficult to put on my salesman’s hat and get out there. I find it easier to give out a free sample and let the client try the product firsthand. I want everyone to feel fabulous about any product they buy from Think Pretty!

What advice would you give to a new consultant starting out?

Make sure you’re selling a product that you absolutely love! I also suggest finding a line that isn’t already flooding the marketplace. If your friends are like mine, they really appreciate being shown something new and unique. Don’t be scared to get the word out there and share the love!

How do you manage all of your personal and business activities?

I am a big Apple fangirl! I have about a dozen apps that really help keep me on track. I have a notes app (evernote) that I just dump everything in – every night I go through everything and make a to-do list for the next day. It’s simple and keeps all my work flowing!
