Interview with Nikula Gandhi – Owner of SweetDreamzVille

Inteview with Nikula GandhiTell us a little bit about yourself and your entrepreneurial journey.

My name is Nikula. As a mom of two boys, ages 4 and 6, I enjoy the outdoors and love spending time with the kids.

Since 2008, right after my first child, I started designing sleepwear for him. I wanted something that my child could relax in after his bath, at the same time, was durable enough to play, tumble, and wrestle in (boys will be boys). I could not find much at a reasonable price that was fun, elegant, devoid of Disney characters, and of course soothing to their skin.

So I started to design and tailor sleepwear for my kids. It all started with a great idea and a little hard work. Today, I proud provide quality sleepwear direct to your doorstep.

What did you do before launching your own business?

I have a Masters in Biomedical Engineering and was working as a Senior Test Engineer designing and testing heart catheters. After my 1st child, I switched my full-time hours to part-time, so that I could spend more time with my kids. But even being part-time, I still felt like I was working all the time. It felt like I wasn’t spending any time with my kids, so eventually I quit my job.

How did you fund your business?

This is self-funded business. I only make a limited amount of sleepwear at a time. My goal is to sell more, so that I can use that money to build the business.

What has been your biggest business struggle as an entrepreneur?

Getting the word out about my business and products. I’m not a blogger, so it’s tough for me to tell everyone about my business. I keep doubting myself … Reaching out to other moms who know what it’s like to run a business, has helped me tremendously.

How are you growing your business?

Talking to fellow mom entrepreneurs, as well as taking advantage of free PR opportunities. I want to grow my business by making real connections. It’s important for me to build trust with my customers, so that they can trust me and my products.

What marketing strategies work best for you?

I’m building the business one customer at a time. Customers matter a lot to me and by having the right pajamas, I hope to build trust with them which will help my business grow.

Interview with Nikula Gandhi - Owner of SweetDreamzVilleWhat advice do you have for other women who want to start their own business?

Follow your dreams. If you know what you want to do just keep going. Do not give up and trust YOURSELF!

On those “don’t feel like it days”, what motivates you to keep going?

I am trying to teach my kids “by example” — that they should follow their dreams and work hard for it. So when I feel overwhelmed, I remember this and it helps me to keep moving forward.

As a mom of two boys how do you manage all of your personal and business activities?

Family always comes first. Everything I have to do for business — I prioritize. I make my priority list and then take it from there. It makes me feel organized and allows me to get things done easily.
