It Starts With the First Step

It Starts With the First StepDr. Barbara Seifert, CPC

If you’ve ever wanted to achieve a goal but held yourself back, you’re not alone. I would say that the majority of people who have big dreams will never achieve them; In fact, there are studies that show that number falls between 70% to 78%! That is a high number of people who fail to reach their dreams and desires. And that is frightening to me. The feelings of disappointment and regret are very difficult to live with, particularly if the person who lets you down is you.

There are many reasons why most people never reach their goals, some of which include:

  • They dream too big
  • They dream too small
  • They are unclear on why they want the goal
  • They have a fear or insecurity
  • They did not plan and prepare for how they will reach that goal
  • They take action too quickly
  • They take action too slowly or not at all

While all of these reasons may be valid, they are also able to be changed. And it is within your power to make that change happen. You might be asking, “How can I do that; how can I push forward and reach my goals?”

I would answer, “It starts with the first step.” Moving away from what you don’t want towards what you do starts with being crystal clear on what your life will be like once you have achieved your goal; without it, you will be moving aimlessly and will eventually give up.

Starting small in your action steps allows your fear center to remain dormant, which then moves you forward on what you have laid out. Small steps eventually become easier and, as we see results, lead to feelings of accomplishment and increased motivation. Soon, these small steps produce the biggest changes by the achievements you have made. You will have developed good habits by the consistent actions you have taken, which sets the stage for future success; future goal-planning will come easier and, rather than obstacles, you will see your way in taking the first step with confidence!
