It’s Time for a “Check-up from the Neck-Up”

It's Time for a “Check-up from the Neck-Up”By Tami Gomez

I used to hear that saying a lot after I retired from professional golf. Getting a “check-up from the neck-up” simply implies that you need to see where your head is at on a regular basis. Do you have the mindset of a champion or do you doubt yourself, your decisions and your beliefs?

As a golf touring professional, I learned a lot of lessons on and off the golf course. The game of golf is considered the “gentleman’s sport”, which meant I had to learn good manners, show integrity, and be humble in winning (and losing) golf tournaments. After I retired from professional golf, I quickly realized that these factors are an important key to my success as a business woman. The mental training I received during my days on the tour now plays an important factor in my business life.

You see, working from home and owning your own business isn’t easy – but you know that. In addition to the attributes I mentioned in my opening paragraph, it also takes motivation, persistence, good decision making skills, believing in yourself (and your mission), and discipline. Sounds like a lot right? It is if you’re trying to do it all by yourself.

I wouldn’t have been very successful on the golf course if I didn’t have training and support. As soon as my parents saw that I had potential, they immediately hired a swing coach for me. Someone that could teach me the fundamentals of the game and oversee the technical part of my game. We found two phenomenal instructors that I worked with throughout my career. Unfortunately, I had limited success because (as I found out later), my head wasn’t screwed on straight.

Golf, as in life, is 90% mental and 10% ability. My parents and I never even heard of a sports psychologist, much less knew that we needed to hire one. It wasn’t until later in my career that I found out that they existed. By that point, I was in my 30′s and my career was coming to an end. That was a defining moment for me – It was when I realized that I wanted to help people overcome their mental and emotional challenges. I wanted to make sure other people didn’t go through what I went through… I wanted to be a coach.

Since then, I have trained under some of the best teachers in the field of sports psychology and personal development. I earned my Certification as a Mental Skills Training Specialist and have been helping athletes reach their full potential for the past 10 years.

So what does all of this have to do with you and your business? My point is this… You can spend a ton of money to have someone teach you the skills you need to run a successful business, but if you don’t believe you deserve to be wealthy or successful, all of that money will be wasted. On the other hand, if you spend all of your time and money on your mentality without working on your skills, that money will be wasted as well.

You need both!

If you want to take your business to the next level, I highly encourage you to invest in yourself. Hire a coach (or two) that can help you get on the fast-track to the success you’ve been yearning for. Find someone that can teach you the skills you need and also help you breakthrough the limiting beliefs that are holding you back.

I never give unsolicited recommendations for coaching but you can email me if you would like me to send you some names of coaches that I have (and continue to) work with. You can email me at Tami@BrainBootCamps.com.

Your potential is unlimited. All you need is to surround yourself with the people that can bring out the best in you! Don’t waste years trying to do it yourself like I did. Hire a coach!
