Sharpening Your Leadership Skills: Be Effective in Your Career and in Your Life

Leadership SkillsDr. Barbara Seifert, CPC

More than ever before, effective leaders are needed in all sectors and in all organizations. Doing so will bring employees and the organization to the highest level of performance and result in engaged, productive, and satisfied employees while ensuring profit and an identifiable brand for the company. When ineffective leadership is in place, the opposite occurs – disengaged and dissatisfied employees, which can result in high levels of absenteeism, turnover and profit loss.

To be an effective leader, we hear about the attributes of what one ‘should’ have – charisma, an entrepreneurial mind, good communication skills, good problem-solving skills, and a host of other desired traits. But these do not always make one an effective leader if they don’t have relateability or an empathetic heart; good leaders are always self-aware of their leader behaviors and they work on sharpening these skills on a daily basis.

Here are five daily actions that effective leaders take to ensure they are performing at their highest level and that you can model after:

1. They are self-aware.

Effective leaders know their skills, traits, personality, passions, habits, values and work to keep them in-check. When they encounter a person or situation that is challenging, they are able to self-regulate their responses and interactions that will result in a positive outcome.

2. They practice empathy.

Effective leaders look at their position as one of service to others – to their employees and to the organization. They know that their employees are people, who have thoughts and feelings, and they strive to be mindful of how company decisions may affect these workers; they look at all sides when delivering their initiatives to help them to be accepting and complete these goals.

3. They surround themselves with people who know more than they do.

Effective leaders are aware that they are not omnipotent, i.e. they do not know everything or have all the answers. Hiring people who do have the knowledge and skills, and then empowering them to use those skills, gains worker’s loyalty, enthusiasm and satisfaction.

4. They establish and nurture their relationships.

Effective leaders are great at meeting people and being interested in them and what they do; they work to nurture these relationships by staying in touch, sending acknowledgements, and being of service in some form or fashion. They know that relationships are the key to staying ahead in business.

5. They take care of their personal and professional development.

Effective leaders schedule in time to nurture their body and their mind, both of which are essential to detaching from workplace stress and recharging to have the energy to lead. Professionally, they are reading business books or magazines; they are going to seminars, attending professional associations or meeting with other leaders, perhaps in a mastermind group with the aim to increase their knowledge and skills. They strive to keep current on industry trends and to stay one step-ahead.

Knowing your skill-set and your strengths, and working off of them, will help you to be a good leader but keeping these skills at their highest level –making it a habit to follow these steps – will make you a great leader!
