Stella & Dot – A Home-Based Business Opportunity for Style Enthusiasts

Recently I wrote an article on the Best Products to Sell from Home, and since writing this article, I’ve had numerous emails and comments on why I didn’t include certain companies on my list.

The first reason is there are just too many direct sales companies for me to include everyone. Secondly, I chose a lot of companies that piqued my interest, so the list tends to be a little heavy on the fashion and style niche, but this is where my passion lies.

Point being the direct sales route is a terrific way to go if you want to start your own business, but you really need to have a passion and interest in the products that you’re selling. If you don’t have that passion and love for what you’re selling – you’re not going to do very well.

So, I wanted to tell you about one of the direct sales companies that I’ve actually thought about joining, Stella & Dot.

I first learned of Stella & Dot four years ago. A friend of a friend had just started selling it and informed me on it, so that I can include it in my research for the website that I was going to launch. I immediately fell in love with their jewelry!

Fast forward a couple of years… I had already launched The Work at Home Woman, and I was connecting with lots of women both locally and nationally. It was at this time that I connected with Tracy Bennett, a Stella & Dot Stylist. She reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in hosting a show for her. I normally don’t agree to this sort of thing, especially for individuals that I don’t know very well, but I loved Stella & Dot’s products, so I agreed to host the trunk show.

Everyone at my party loved the jewelry, even my mom, who typically doesn’t splurge on fashion accessories. It was after this party that I started looking more in depth into the Stella & Dot business opportunity.

What is Stella & Dot…

Stella & Dot is a direct sales company that sells boutique-style jewelry and accessories exclusively through in-home Trunk Shows by Independent Stylists. The one of a kind collections are designed by New York designers and have been featured in Gossip Girl, In Style and Lucky Magazine as well as on the wrists and necklines of today’s hottest celebrities.

The Stella & Dot business opportunity…

  • Individuals can start a Stella & Dot business by purchasing a starter kit for $199, which includes $350 in jewelry samples of their choice, professional business supplies such as Look Books, order forms and more. Additional jewelry samples can be purchased at 50% off. The average Stylist spends about $800 upfront to start her business and receives extensive training.
  • The average trunk show is just over $1,000 in sales, earning the Stylist between $250 and $300 per 90 minute party.
  • Stylists earn 25-30% in commissions on core products, plus they can earn free business supplies and additional jewelry samples each month.
  • Stylists can earn trips and prizes based on sales achievements such as a trip for two to exotic destinations, free jewelry and more.

So what are my thoughts on Stella & Dot? I’m already a fan and purchaser of the products, but what I like about this company is the extensive training and community that they offer their Stylists. Another aspect that I like is, it seems like it would be easy to sell in everyday life – meaning that you can simply wear the jewelry out and about, and when someone asks about it, you can give them your stylist business card. If I didn’t already have a job that I truly loved, this is one opportunity that I would consider getting into.
