You hear the hype… “5 Simple Facebook Tips and Tricks to Supercharge Your Business” or see “How I Grew My Pinterest Following by 5K in 3 Months” and you feel like you need to be on every hot social media platform there is to achieve business and blogging success.

Well, I’m here to tell you — no you don’t.

While it’s tempting to chase the latest social marketing trends, spreading yourself too thin and not fully understanding the various platforms will only hurt your marketing efforts. Before deciding which social platforms to be a part of make sure that you take these aspects into consideration.

What Are Your Goals?

Jumping onto every social media platform before you set your marketing goals is a huge waste of time, not to mention you’ll burn yourself out and your social marketing efforts will be diminished. Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • Are you looking to build trust and boost awareness?
  • Increase sales?
  • Drive traffic to your blog?
  • Enhance customer service?
  • Generate leads?

Once you have these sorts of questions answered you can begin to target the social media platforms that align with your goals.

Who Are You Targeting?

This factor should be taken into consideration when you’re creating your goals. Make sure to actually take time to really narrow down your target audience from their age and gender, to likes, dislikes, educational level, martial status and hobbies. Once you have a clear picture of who you’re targeting, you can then begin the process of determining where they spend their time online.

Time and Likeability:

Now that you have your goals and audience figured out, you’ll need to think about how much time you have to invest in your social media efforts. If you only have five minutes a day, being active on a handful of platforms is going to be difficult. Pick and choose which platforms make the most sense in terms of goals and target audience, as well as which platforms do you enjoy the most. You will ultimately have the most success on the platforms that you enjoy engaging on the most.
