Yoga: Breathe Your Way to a Better Work Day

Yoga: Breathe Your Way to a Better Work DayBy Caitlin Reed

Do you eat at your desk when you work from home? After all, the kitchen is just around the corner, and it’s so simple to whip up something to eat and settle right back into work, right?

Not so fast.

This article from Career Builder brings up some relevant survey results indicating that a solid break in the middle of the day increases work productivity.  That mid-day recharge does wonders for your body, mind, and spirit and allows you to come back to your desk ready to face the afternoon’s tasks instead of getting burned out by a solid 8-hour day.

When it’s time for lunch, take a real break from work to eat – and practice some relaxing stretches and yoga poses for a real recharge.

Sitting at a desk, talking on the phone, typing, and other common work-related tasks can lead to body strain and fatigue.  Many people fall into poor postures when working or sitting for long periods of time without even realizing that they are straining important muscles in their back, neck, shoulders, hands, and wrists.  Taking a lunch-time yoga break is a sure way to revitalize those tiring muscles and condition your body to have better posture.

While many gyms offer lunchtime yoga classes, it is easy to do yoga in the comfort of your home or at your desk before you get back to work.  You can find yoga books, borrow yoga DVDs from the local library, or find yoga instructional guides online, such as YogaJournal.com’s Office Yoga series.

The Mayo Clinic reports that yoga offers health benefits like:

  • Reduced stress from the focus, calm, and balance required to perform yoga
  • Increased fitness, range of motion, and strength from repeated practice of yoga poses and stretches
  • Management of health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, mood issues, and even cancer, high blood pressure, and high heart rate
  • Weight loss due to increased focus on the body

If you find yourself feeling tired or anxious, or even if you just need a mid-day break, give lunchtime yoga a try and experience the benefits that a few sun salutations can offer you in the middle of your busy day!

Namaste.
